2002 The Vintage
Although marred by late spring frost, the year 2002 ended with another good Crush. Despite the frosts, fruit quality was good to excellent, with good berry and cluster sizes. The dry summer was not as hot as the summer of 2001, and control of powdery mildew extended through mid- to late July. Fall was excellent, with nearly ideal conditions, except for an early November frost, which hit some of the late-season grapes. Even this snap had its beneficial side, as many winemakers were thus able to produce ice-style wines.
2002 Signature Pinot Gris
Pinot Gris, cousin to Pinot Noir is truly an Oregon-specific varietal, having been more aggressively developed in the Northwest than any other region in the U.S., including California. Our 2002 Pinot Gris was vinified by whole-cluster pressing and cold fermentation. The wine was fermented Alsatian style, and the softer acidity precluded any malolactic fermentation. The wine was sterile filtered and bottled on September 4, 2003. Our 2002 Signature Pinot Gris offers aromas of apples and citrus fruits accompanied by a fine, steely finish. Pair it successfully with Oregon Dungeness crab, shellfish dishes and poultry.
